Overview

The Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP) is an economic immigration program that nominates people for permanent residence in Alberta. Nominees must have skills to fill job shortages or be planning to buy or start a business in Alberta. They must also be able to provide for their families. The program is run by the governments of Alberta and Canada.

AINP provides 2 categories for foreign workers who live and work or plan to live and work here in Alberta:

A. Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS)

Eligibility

  1. a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA)
  2. a LMIA exemption for workers based on one of the following exemptions as determine by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):
    • international trade agreements
    • workers transferred within a company
    • International Experience Canada
    • Mobilité Francophone
    • an open work permit issued by IRCC to:
      • vulnerable workers who have demonstrated they are experiencing abuse or are at risk of abuse in the context of their employment in Canada, including under the Vulnerable Workers Open Work Permit (VWOWP) exemption, or
      • the family members of a vulnerable worker under the VWOWP exemption
  3. a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) held by a graduate of an Alberta Advanced Education publicly funded post-secondary institution
    • PGWP holders must also meet specific occupation, education and work experience requirements as set out below.
      • If you are in a NOC 0, A or B occupation, each English language skill must be at least Level 5 and each French language skill must be at least Level 5.

B. Alberta Express Entry Stream

Eligibility

You may receive a Notification of Interest letter if you:

    1. Have an active Express Entry profile in the federal Express Entry pool
    2. Have stated an interest in immigrating permanently to Alberta
    3. Are working in an occupation that supports Alberta’s economic development and diversification
    4. Have a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System score of 300

Factors that increase opportunities

Meeting one or more of the following adaptability factors may also increase your likelihood of receiving a Notification of Interest letter:

  1. you have an Alberta job offer and/or work experience
  2. you are a graduate of a Canadian post-secondary institution
  3. you have a parent, child, brother and/or sister who is a permanent resident living in Alberta, or a Canadian citizen living in Alberta

Processing Times  

Under normal circumstances, an applicant can obtain an immigrant visa within one year after being invited to apply and become a permanent resident of Canada.
