On November 12th, Canada announced a new immigration plan to provide Hong Kong students and youth with new open work permits and student permits, and to broaden their access to permanent residency in order to attract them to immigrate To Canada. The plan is based on the Canadian Immigration Plan 2021-2023, which aims to encourage Hong Kong graduates and Hong Kong youth with work experience to choose Canada as a place to study, work and live.
Open Work Permit
This program is designed for Hong Kong residents who have completed secondary school in Canada or overseas in the past 5 years, providing them with a work permit for up to 3 years. Eligible spouses, common-law partners and dependent children can also apply for study or work permits as appropriate. This plan is expected to be launched in 2021.
This three-year work permit will allow Hong Kong youths to work in Canada and expand their chances of obtaining permanent residency in Canada.
Study Permit
The government will also expedite the application of study permits for Hong Kong young people who intend to study in Canada. The Minister of Immigration Mendicino announced that qualified Hong Kong youths will be granted a special permanent residence application after completing their studies in Canada.
